Leadership Transition: Leading Others
Guiding people through the passage from individual contributor to first time leader
Guiding people through the passage from individual contributor to first time leader
To ensure a steady supply of leaders with the right skills in the right positions, knowledge-driven organisations need to develop a full leadership pipeline. Leadership Transition Programs*, like those offered by TNM Business, support organisations to create this pipeline using a concept based on the model created by HR advisor Walt Mahler, a designer of the succession process at General Electric. The concept teaches specific skills and mindsets needed at six different ‘passages’ or ‘transitions of leadership’.
The first passage, moving from managing oneself to managing others, can trip up many potential leaders because they are reluctant to move away from what they have been doing, to become successful. Moving away from inspiring themselves to inspiring others and allowing others to take on tasks so that they can concentrate on more strategic matters is often difficult as it requires leaders to have a fundamental change in mindset and a new set of communication and organisation skills that they mightn’t possess innately. This can be stressful and challenging for the new leader and their direct reports!
TNM Business’ Leadership Transition: Leading Others program teaches participants key leadership concepts – work values, time application and leadership skills – to prepare them for success in their new role, before they start leading their new team.
*This program complements our Leadership Transition: Leading Leaders program which focuses on the second and third stages of leadership
Please link this one to this program page.
This program has been designed specifically for people who are taking on their first leadership or management role with a minimum of two direct reports. No prior leadership experience or training is necessary.
We recommend that participants complete this program before or as soon as possible after starting a leadership role for the first time.
The program can be delivered for up to 20 participants in English, German, French or Spanish.
The step from accepting a leadership position to becoming a successful leader takes more than merely acquiring better leadership skills. It calls for a fundamental adjustment in mindset!
This program is based on high impact learning principles and integrates the participants’ real-life situation into the programs. This is done to an extent where the participants often feel that being at the program is like being at their job.
This module forms the basis of the program and introduces the basic framework of the leadership pipeline: that every leadership transition has a major impact on the work values, time management and leadership skills required to do the job. Each module is linked to those concepts.
Participants will learn techniques to set objectives for direct reports and to prioritise their work based on those objectives.
Participants will learn key skills of delegating tasks, offering support and following up on completion.
Participants will learn about the role of coaching as a means of developing others in addition to specific coaching techniques.
Participants will learn how to prepare and conduct annual performance reviews, give and receive feedback, and handle difficult conversations.
Participants will learn how to build high performance teams using the concept of ‘getting the right people on the bus’.
Participants will learn how to implement and sustain their learning when they return to their home offices.
The Leadership Transition: Leading Others program is designed to:
Leading Others facilitates insightful and action-based learning through short presentations, showcases, interactive workshops and breakout exercises, as well as personal and group reflection.
Individual and group insight is encouraged through meaningful feedback from facilitators, and, as far as possible, by tailoring case studies and breakout exercises to the daily realities of participants. This learning approach develops self-awareness for teams and individuals, provides opportunities to practice new skills, and increases participants’ self-confidence.
