Being an Effective Manager

Essentials skills for management and team development

Equipping new managers with the mindset and skills for success

Transitioning from team member to successful manager takes more than just acquiring new management skills and competencies: it calls for a fundamental adjustment in mindset.

Being an Effective Manager is a facilitated learning experience that empowers first-level managers to make the necessary shifts in their work values, and learn how toy apply their time and skills to be effective.

This three-day program explores both core management and key leadership skills, as well as diving into the mindset of an effective first-line manager.

And because learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum, Being an Effective Manager has been designed using high-impact learning principles that integrate participants’ real-life situations into the learning experience, making it immediately relevant and meaningful.

Who this program is for

This program is for newly appointed first-time managers who have had little or no first-hand management experience.

What to expect on this program

The Being an Effective Manager program works towards the accomplishment of these learning objectives:

1. Develop a common understanding of what a leader of others versus a manager does; what shift in work values is needed; how they prioritise their time; and what skills they need to master.

2. Learn and develop the essential concepts and skills of a leader of others including:

  • the principals of value-based leadership: integrating and driving the core values
  • delegation as a work value: getting results through others is what a leader of others does, and delegating is how they do it
  • conducting performance dialogues: how to prepare for and conduct feedback, coaching, performance appraisals and challenging conversations
  • empowering teams via collaboration, motivation and engagement
  • spotting and promoting potential within a team

These objectives are achieved by exploring the following content:

  • The difference between management and leadership

How participants learn

This program is a blended solution offering a mix of lectures, discussion, and coaching scenarios for practice, plus learning exercises and coaching demonstrations by the lead coach.

Participants engage with a variety of learning methods including short theoretical presentations, video showcases, interactive workshops, break-out exercises, as well as personal and group reflections. Individual and group learning is accelerated by concrete feedback from the facilitator. This methodology develops self-awareness, allows moments for practising new skills, and increases the self-confidence of the participants.

Learning takes place in three phases.

  • Phase 1: Preparation via self-guided assignments
  • Phase 2: Delivery via three days of face-to-face or virtual training. Includes personal development planning and buddy coaching setup
  • Phase 3: Integration with a 90-120 minute virtual group follow-up session

Participants will benefit from

  • Fun, relaxed and interactive sessions that go beyond standard leadership and management programs
  • Highly experienced facilitators with decades of leadership and coaching experience in an industry relevant to them
