Being a Coach – High Impact

Coaching techniques to empower others for extraordinary results

High-impact coaching skills that transform leaders into enablers of change, innovation and ownership

Managing and leading people in today’s ever-evolving digitally-focused business environment takes more than technical knowledge, delegation skills and regular progress meetings. Leaders of people need exceptional communication skills, self-awareness and the ability to cultivate initiative, innovation and courage in their people.

Being a Coach – High Impact is a comprehensive and high-intensity coaching training program that teaches coaching as an advanced communication and leadership skill. This program is based on the GROW (Goals, Reality, Options and Will) coaching model and uses role-play with real cases that are specific and relevant to the business environments the participants work in every day.

Who this program is for

Being a Coach – High Impact has been designed for leaders wanting to extend their leadership capability to instil motivation, courage and initiative in their people.

What to expect on this program

Being a Coach – High Impact uses an Action Learning Group format.

An Action Learning Group (ALG) is a group of peers who develop themselves and each other by using each other’s experience and knowledge to deal with similar situations and issues. Its members learn with and from each other through real-time application and practice of the skills they are developing so that the learning process itself becomes a group project. Each member takes responsibility for the results of their own learning process.

Using ALGs is an integral part of the Being a Coach – High Impact training as it supports the on-the-job implementation of coaching skills, competencies and attitudes that are learnt during the workshops and virtual sessions.

The same method of insight-based learning is used in professional coach training and in the coaching process itself: coaching is about awareness, knowledge, practice and review. This is why the ALG structure lends itself so well to this program.

Being a Coach – High Impact ALG members bring their real work issues to the table so the group can act as a team, coaching them to reflect, learn and act in order to resolve the issue. While practising and observing the essential coaching skills and competencies they have learned, group members support each other in thinking things through, creating options, designing actions and reflecting on the impact of those actions.

Learning outcomes

Armed with coaching skills and a deeper understanding of how we work as humans, leaders leave this program with a practised ability to guide their people to confidently find solutions for themselves instead of giving them the answers.

In this new, empowered way of working leaders give their people ownership of goals and tasks instead of instructions, resulting in measurably higher levels of productivity, motivation and greater business sustainability.

In more depth, this looks like…

2 Days Face to Face Training
This workshop lays the groundwork for the Action Learning Group with a hands-on and minds-on introduction to coaching in the workplace. The focus is on how to be a coach and how to do coaching.

Leaders who have coaching skills understand and can tap into intrinsic motivation and empower people to take responsibility for their own performance. We introduce participants to the essential skills of coaching with the aim that they will start using core coaching competencies to shift to an advanced level of communication and enhanced leadership (including personal leadership).

This is a highly interactive, experiential workshop where participants discover how easy it is to use coaching to take themselves, those they lead and their organisation to greater heights.

This workshop is also very flexible. While we have an agenda of basic coaching concepts that need to be covered, we recognise that we live in a dynamic, changing world so we embrace whatever emerges from our interactions with the participants so that it meets their immediate needs.

Agenda:

Competency-Based Coaching:

      • What is coaching?
      • Coaching distinctions (mentoring vs coaching, consulting vs coaching, counselling vs coaching)
      • Core elements of successful coaching
      • What is required for successful coaching?
      • Core coaching competencies

Foundational Coaching Skills:

      • Coaching styles
      • Listening
      • Asking questions
      • Trust building
      • Developing
      • Coaching challenging situations

Coaching Model:

      • GROW coaching model
      • Supportive behaviours in coaching conversations
      • Coaching Skills for GROW

The GROW coaching model and coaching skills allow participants to build on the foundational coaching skills learned in the second session. When used together at a masterful level, they become a way of “being” a Coach versus just “doing” coaching.

As pre-work, participants are asked to think about a situation they have personally experienced as line managers, sales managers or employees, and to prepare it as a case study for coaching.

Coaching playground:
Coaching is best learned by doing so this part of the workshop is dedicated to putting learning into practice.

Personal action plan:
Participants are asked to think of five to ten actions they will commit to taking during the course. They are asked to share their commitment with the group and will be assigned a mentor coach to work with over the next two months.

1-Day Follow-Up Action Learning Group Session (Face-to-face or Virtual)
The aim of this group coaching day is to reconnect and consolidate the learning from Being a Coach – High Impact Part I, through the same method of reflection and insight-based learning that is used in professional coach training, and through Action Learning Group Coaching.

We review the basic skills, competencies and coaching model that was introduced in Part I of this program, and introduce some new, more advanced skills.

The aim is to take on-the-job training experience and convert that into learning to enhance coaching skills and the development of the participants as coaches.

2-Hour Virtual Action Learning Group Session
The aim of this session is to reconnect and consolidate the learning from Being a Coach – High Impact Part II, again using the same method of reflection and insight-based learning that is used in professional coach training, and through Action Learning Group coaching.

We also introduce the vital skill of virtual coaching.

Again, the aim is to enhance coaching skills and the development of the participants as coaches.

Participants will benefit from

  • Fun, relaxed and interactive sessions that go beyond standard professional development programs
  • Highly experienced trainers with decades of leadership and coaching experience in an industry relevant to them
  • A holistic approach that develops their mind, soul and spirit
  • Social learning and support from other participants
  • Learning that fits within a tailored development program
