The Power Behind Success: Team Cohesion in the Workplace

How to ignite team cohesion to inspire collaboration and drive success.

Imagine it’s 2014, and the whole world is watching the FIFA World Cup semi-final. Brazil, the favourite to win, with superstars like Neymar, Thiago Silva, and Dani Alves, faced Germany. On paper, Brazil looked unbeatable with their line-up of world-class talent. But what happened? Germany dismantled Brazil 7-1, in what became one of the most shocking defeats in Brazilian football history. How did it happen? Germany’s secret weapon wasn’t just talent – it was their remarkable team cohesion that made all the difference.

This story reflects what happens in the workplace too. You may have a team full of brilliant individuals, but without cohesion, those sparks may never turn into a blazing fire. Just as Brazil’s individual stars couldn’t match Germany’s unified approach, the workplace also needs more than just talent to achieve success. The power of a cohesive team lies in its ability to work in sync, support one another, and create magic that far exceeds what any one person could accomplish. It’s the secret sauce for truly great achievements.

What is team cohesion?

Team cohesion is the degree of unity and solidarity within a team. It reflects how well a team works as a single unit, combining individual efforts into collective success. This cohesiveness goes beyond simply organising work processes – it includes emotional bonds and mutual respect among team members. True team cohesion emerges when individuals align their values and beliefs, form strong interpersonal connections, and work seamlessly together, creating an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Why is team cohesion important?

Cohesive teams consistently deliver better results, as their members work together towards common goals. In a cohesive environment, everyone understands their roles and who to rely on when challenges arise, making problem-solving smoother and more efficient. This level of collaboration leads to increased creativity and innovation since team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and challenging each other constructively. The synergy created in such teams ultimately results in higher productivity and success, as everyone actively contributes to achieving shared objectives.

Additionally, cohesive teams enable better resource management. When everyone works efficiently towards a shared goal, the team’s resources, whether time, finances, or manpower, are optimally utilised. Leaders benefit as well – they no longer need to micromanage or constantly monitor their team’s activities. Instead, they can focus on strategic decisions and their core responsibilities, knowing their team can operate effectively with minimal supervision.

Team cohesion also plays a critical role in employee retention. When individuals feel connected and valued within a team, they’re less likely to experience feelings of isolation, thereby significantly reducing turnover rates. Employee turnover is not only disruptive but also expensive, with costs ranging from 0.5 to 2 times the departing employee’s annual salary. A large portion of this expense comes from training new hires — businesses typically spend the equivalent of six to nine months of an employee’s salary to find and train their replacement. High turnover also negatively impacts overall employee morale, leading to decreased productivity and job satisfaction.

How to improve team cohesion

Improving team cohesion is not an easy feat, especially in today’s world where remote and hybrid work are increasingly common. Cohesive teams also don’t happen by accident. Cohesion takes a deliberate, focused effort to foster genuine connections. Below are 11 critical actions that  leaders can take to improve team cohesion:

  • Foster a culture of trust
Trust forms the bedrock of effective teams. According to PwC’s 19th Annual Global CEO Survey, over half of the questioned CEOs identified a lack of trust as a significant threat to their organisations’ growth. Establishing trust involves creating an environment where employees feel they can rely on one another because the company values accountability over blame. Leaders should communicate transparently about major organisational changes and provide support when challenges arise, demonstrating that the team can depend on each other through both successes and setbacks.
  • Define vision and values
A cohesive team needs a common purpose. Start by defining a shared vision of success for your team and company. Beyond just setting a goal, vision is about creating something inspirational — something that everyone can rally behind. Furthermore, it’s important to define the values that guide your team’s actions to achieve that vision. Team members who understand and identify with the values of the organisation are more likely to contribute meaningfully. Periodically asking employees what they believe the company’s values are can help gauge alignment and identify areas for improvement.
  • Set clear goals
Team cohesion thrives when there is clarity on both long-term and short-term goals. Set clear deadlines and establish specific objectives at different levels — company-wide, team-specific, and individual. By organising these goals in a “goal pyramid,” team members can understand where they fit in and how their work contributes to broader organisational success. This approach also offers transparency, allowing everyone to understand how each goal supports the overall mission thereby strengthening their commitment to achieving it.
  • Empower team members
Empowering employees involves delegating authority and creating an atmosphere where each person feels their work matters. Empowerment can range from simply giving someone responsibility for a specific task to enabling more significant decision-making within the team. When employees feel valued and trusted to take initiative or handle a significant task, they are more likely to contribute their best efforts. Moreover, shared responsibility leads to greater cohesion, as team members become invested in the collective outcome, knowing their contributions directly impact the group’s success.
  • Acknowledge successes
Recognition is an important tool for fostering team cohesion. When team members put in extra effort or achieve something significant, their peers and manager should be encouraged to call it out and acknowledge it — either privately or publicly. Public recognition can boost morale across the team and motivates others to contribute more meaningfully. Celebrating even small victories can help maintain a positive team atmosphere and reinforce the sense of being in it together.
  • Encourage open communication
It seems obvious, but for team cohesion to thrive, honest and consistent communication is essential. Teams need to share information, provide updates, and ensure everyone is informed about changes. Establishing communication protocols — such as real-time meetings, shared messaging platforms, and effective information management systems — can help achieve this. Providing the tools and resources needed for clear communication ensures that everyone knows what is expected and can freely share ideas, give feedback, and resolve misunderstandings constructively.
  • Invest in training and development
Training plays an essential role in building a cohesive team. When team members are confident in their skills, they are more likely to contribute actively and support each other. Providing opportunities for skill development not only helps individuals grow professionally but also boosts their confidence in their contributions, leading to a stronger team dynamic.
