As we near the end of 2021, the time is ripe to start preparing for what is to come. With 2022 weeks away, it’s a great opportunity to take a day in order to figure out exactly what it is you want from next year - and how you are going to get it!
December 31st is a powerful symbol of new beginnings and a chance to wipe the slate clean. There is something cathartic and satisfying about building up towards this date and then starting afresh on January 1st, ready to tackle the year ahead.
So how do we attack the New Year with gusto?
Take stock of the past year
It’s time to dive deep into the last 12 months and reflect on what worked, and what didn’t. By asking yourself some tough questions, you can get to the bottom of what has been a success and what hasn’t.
Some questions to get you started are:
- What did you achieve?
- Where did you ‘fail’?
- What did you learn?
- What personal values did you live by?
- What were your happiest moments?
- What would you like to change?
Write a personal mission statement for the year
Writing a mantra for the year ahead allows you to stay focused and remember your ‘why’. Reading it in the morning and again before you go to sleep will help to ingrain it in your mind and keep your eye on the prize!
List the big goals you want to achieve
When it comes to goals, it’s best not to overwhelm yourself and make a list of 20 things, big or small, you want to achieve. Choose three huge, life-changing goals and break them down into manageable weekly and monthly steps. Decide how you are going to tackle them, and work on them every day - even if it is just a little.
Create a non-negotiable daily routine
Your routine creates your habits, and if you tackle it with daily consistency you will stay on track to meet your goals for the year ahead. Don’t over complicate it: simply list five things that you know you will enjoy and that will benefit your health, mood and motivation. They don’t have to be directly associated with your goal, for example, you could list things such as waking up early, meditation, journaling or exercise. These are all habits that will set you up for a productive day and to feel good in yourself, which, in turn, will help you to work on what you want to achieve.
Embrace adventure - make a bucket list
Writing a new bucket list (or updating an existing one) of all kinds of fun, wild and wonderful activities is a great way to ensure you have an incredible year ahead. Make a list of 50 things you want to do, then split them up into activities and experiences you could easily complete at any time and things that require more planning. Try to tick off at least one item from your list every month, and see how it will boost your sense of fun and lift your spirits.
If you don’t clear away what you don’t need, how can you make space to invite in the new? Clear out everything you no longer use or need, and refresh your space. Starting the new year in the right way involves letting go of what no longer serves you. If it’s occupying space and it no longer is something you are passionately in love with then it’s time to let it go.
Give Back to the community
On that note, there is nothing more rewarding than giving back to your community. Find a way in which you can serve others around you, whether it be volunteering at a nursing home, mentoring someone around you or joining an organisation to help those in need. Connecting with others through service is a powerful opportunity to open your heart and gives you a sense of emotional and spiritual fulfilment.
