Overview

Job dissatisfaction, overworked, overwhelmed and disempowered employees and stress are all huge costs in today's organizations.

Today's workforce wants it all - a fulfilling and stretching job as well as the space, time and energy to enjoy quality time with friends and family. Gone are the days when 'milking' employees works. Organizations have to engage their workforce if they are to get the best performance. Research has proven time and again that the best performing employees are those who have a healthy balance between their working and private lives. However, that balance is a highly individual matter. What one person sees as balance is hugely out-of-balance to the next. This suggests a one-size-fits-all approach is likely to fail and hence raises the question as to what to do to enable people to have a higher level of balance - whatever that means to them - with a view to increasing productivity and bottom line results.

Ultimately, this course is about increasing participants' awareness. Increased awareness allows people to choose and to do so consciously.

This course provides participants with a number of thought-provoking and interactive exercises that explore what truly matters to the individual and provides participants with the tools to generate value-driven strategies and action-plans to accomplish what they want inside and outside of work. Participants get a chance to explore how they use their time, energy and focus and to align this with their values and goals. The program also provides an insight into stress and its impact on the individual, the team and the organization. Participants get the opportunity to explore what their stress 'triggers' are, how to read and anticipate stress and how to deal with stress in themselves as well as spot the first signs of stress in others; thus providing the organization with an early-warning system for stress symptoms.

This course doesn't 'talk' Work Life Balance; it 'does' Work Life Balance. Participants walk out with a higher level of awareness of what they want and a clear plan as to how to make it happen.

Key competencies addressed and learned in this program

  • Personal awareness about the individual's needs, values, motivations etc.
  • Recognition that it is 'you', the individual who has to take responsibility for your balance - in other words you cannot blame the organization.
  • Assertiveness skills.
  • Time management skills/personal productivity.
  • Positive influencing skills; how to communicate to achieve a win/win solution.
  • Some coaching skills.
  • Setting of effective long and short term goals.
  • How to make commitments that will last i.e. generating action with impact.

Key learning outcomes

  • Increased understanding of what Work Life balance means to the individual and this is different from individual to individual. For many participants this is a huge insight and especially participants with people management responsibilities seem to gain from this. As they realize that what they would like to have more or less of might be completely different from what their direct reports might want.
  • Participants feel empowered to make the choices that work for them as well as for the organization; often people feel like they are back in the driving seat.
  • A clear understanding of the importance of work life balance to the organization as well as the cost of stress.
  • Recognizing the importance of a good work life balance for yourself and the people you manage.
  • Understanding stress, its symptoms, impact and how to deal with it effectively in others and in 'self'.
  • Developing a framework for using time effectively and setting goals.
  • A set of approaches, tools and skills for participants to use on and for themselves as well as for their teams and colleagues.
  • Cross-fertilization of ideas across the company. Participants learn from each other.
  • Increased network/support network.

Additional information specific to this program

  • Facilitator/group ratio: 1:6 minimum and 1:15 maximum
  • Room requirements: horse shoe layout, no tables, no projector, 2 flipcharts, blue tack, pens, paper, flipchart pens
  • Preparation needed: It would be helpful to have a conversation with a senior stakeholder before the roll-out of the program. The discussion would need to find a way of positioning where the organization stands on the issue of work life balance, how does the organization support it and how does it hinder it and what is the positioning message it wants to send to its employees. This is also an opportunity for the organization to communicate what support mechanisms are in place to help employees to increase their effectiveness or deal with stress etc.

Materials

A powerful potential follow-up to this workshop is a workshop that deals with intact teams. Here the team gets together and designs how it wants to work together from now on to achieve a higher level of productivity, better results whilst also providing each individual with a better balance in their lives. This can also be a stand-alone workshop but is more impactful when at least some members of the team have attended this workshop first.
